@$$hole!: Ren Faire 2011 (part 7)

 In web comics

Looks like we’re establishing fighting styles here. Trevor is all about macking on the ladies, Dave is all about the cheap shots, and Josh – well, Josh is trying to block another man’s advance.

In reality while shooting this, my cameraman was outside a ring that was in a little glade. The ring had little shade, so it was extremely hot while standing there – much less when fighting. The helmet didn’t get extremely hot inside (in terms of burning the skin), but it was definitely sweaty and not as well ventilated as you’d like. Your vision is a little skewed as well, so you can only really see what’s directly in front of you. This is bad when fighting two people – the person with the best situational awareness (or peripheral vision) may have an advantage.

The people working the booth were good at instructing you how to handle the weapon, defend and strike (since you’re aiming for a balloon on the head, it’s a little different from any fencing I’ve done before). Thankfully there was little risk of getting hurt. One hand was on the sword, the other securely behind your back grabbing a hand-hold on the armor. If that hand moved, however, there was certainly danger of the hand being seriously injured.

Probably not severed, though, since the swords were dull.

Anyway, the battle begins next week Wednesday, so be sure to stay tuned!

News update: Congratulations to all the Harvey Award winners from last weekend. Reading with Pictures was nominated for two Harvey’s, and while we didn’t win it’s a comforting feeling to just be nominated. Plus, it shows that the industry recognizes the importance of comics in education and to encourage learning among young readers.

For future convention appearances, the schedule to the right on the website is fully up to date.

NYCC: October 13-16; New York City, NY
I’ll be running the Reading with Pictures booth in small press, and giving a few panels throughout the weekend.

Mid-Ohio Con: October 22-23; Columbus, OH
The very next weekend I’ll be a guest at Wizard World Ohio. Er, um…Mid-Ohio Con. I had a lot of fun at this show last year as a guest, and sold incredibly well at Wizard World Chicago the last two years. It’ll be a fun time.

KollisionCon: November 18-20; St. Charles, IL
I’ll be a guest at this anime show out in Pheasant Run. Many of the same people from ACEN are running it, and I always have a blast at their shows. I’ll have a bunch of panels throughout the weekend, so be sure to stop by.
