@$$hole!: Why Am I Single, Again?

July 14th, 2010 | by Trevor
Posted In: web comics

Another profile steal (and the return of shirtless Trevor, sporting my Halloween get-up from 2008 as Spider from Transmetropolitan). But my 3-month experiment on match.com is about to come to a close, and it’s dangerously close to being an expensive failure. Like my previous experiences with online dating, there’s a whole lot of sending e-mails out and never hearing back. I don’t know if the women aren’t reading them, the women are reading them and ignoring me, or the profiles aren’t actually people at all.

In a numbers game, you’d imagine that at least 10% of the people you e-mail would return the message in some way. In the 3 months I’ve been on the site I’ve e-mailed over 300 women. I’ve heard back from 4 people.

1) “We’d be a great match, but I’m moving away tomorrow.” – yeah, she didn’t move. Or she didn’t update her profile location.
2) “My profile is ending, e-mail me here.” – So I do. And I don’t hear back.
3) “My profile is ending, e-mail me here.” – So I do, and we exchange a few e-mails. Then she drops off the face of the earth.
4) “Go f- yourself.” – Her profile then later said that she hated when people didn’t read her profile, which said that she was 33, and then her profile description said that she was 39…go figure.

I’ve met people at conventions and whatnot that have had a lot of success with online dating, and that’s always encouraging to me. So I keep trying. I’m going to give another site a shot, but I’m not encouraged.

I’ve been wracking my brain thinking about where to meet a girl that I’d get along with. I have no desire to meet someone at a bar (or god forbid, a club), but the benefit there is that you at least know that the girl is over 21. But the places where I would meet a girl I think would have similar interests include: conventions, comic stores, book stores, library, or maybe a movie theater.

But the important thing to take away from this is that you’re not going to meet anyone sitting at home playing video games. Going out, putting yourself into a position to meet someone – that’s an important first step. It’s summertime in Chicago, and I’ve been going out to meet single ladies. Sadly, while I’m looking for them at the bookstore, they all appear to be at the beach.

And I sunburn easily. :P

@$$hole!: Insecurities

June 4th, 2010 | by Trevor

Being in the dating pool again, there are a lot of insecurities – especially since I hadn’t had the time to work out at all since last year. While these are legitimate fears, they’re hardly to the extreme that you take them in satire like this.

That said, I’ve started scouting for a gym in my neighborhood. Which would be much easier to find if I were a woman. Because there’s like 4 women-only gyms within walking distance of my place. And maybe 2 that allow men.

I don’t think a wig will get me in, either, but that could be a fun basis for a comic….

###

In other news, remember that awesome convention I went to a month back called ACEN? Well, I attended opening ceremonies to some 1,000 fantastic people, but only had the picture to go with it. Well, doing a quick google search of myself, I found someone who was cool enough to take video of my quick little speech.

It really was a fantastic weekend, and I’m already looking forward to the next show: Cyphan, June 25-27. It’s going to be another rocking time, and I hope you all come out to say hi.

Got sick on Tuesday but thought I could suck it up and go into the office. Not a good idea. After getting off the train twice to try to avoid puking on the plethora of people riding the metal tube during rush hour, I was able to get myself into the office, grab what I needed, and ended up working from home. It was a slower day for me, but there is just too much to do to just be sick and not go into work. I took a nap for an hour, felt like crap for most of the day, and then decided to go to bed early.

Here’s hoping I feel better tomorrow.

The page is a little rushed because of the illness. I should’ve put another hour or two into it, but my eyes were burning and it felt like there was a gymnast training for the Olympics in my stomach. Ultimately it came down to not updating, or updating with something that was only so-so. Since I haven’t missed an update yet this year (and there’s only 3 weeks left), I wasn’t about to not update!

Talk about suffering for your work. :P

Hopefully there will be a page Friday. A better page. It all depends on whether or not I can shake this illness.

Nominate TrevorAMueller.com in the 2009 Web Comic List Reader’s Choice Awards (no need to sign up, but it helps if you put in some info so they know you’re not a spambot). I’d take any nominations, but I’m specifically looking for:

- Best Writing
- The Innovation Award
- Best Supporting Character – Susie (or the crazy cat lady…or the waiter)

So you’ve no doubt noticed that the blogs have slowed down (or stopped), and part of this is because of a very busy planning season at work. But there are other things going on that you should also be aware of that I’m doing:

Reading with Pictures is a non-profit that my friend Josh Elder has started to help get comics in the classroom. For someone for whom Maus was required reading for history class, this is kind of a big deal. I’ve been working with a fantastic artist and a few editors to develop my 8-page contribution to this fantastic anthology, which will be out next year. Tonight, in fact, they’re having a fundraiser at Chicago Comics in Chicago, Il. I’ll be there, so show up and say hi.

Comic Creator’s Aliance is a charity started by two-time Harvey-nominated comic creator Lora Innes and I’m contributing to a piece that she’s putting together to help raise money and awareness about human trafficking. Lora’s done a few interviews about this already, and some of the stats that she has are truly frightening! There’s more slavery today that there was before the Civil War, and most of it is sexual in nature. Be sure to find out how you can contribute to this cause by visiting the website.

My good friend and Eisner-Award winning artist Jon Bivens has just entered into Zuda’s content with his entry The House Always Wins. Be sure to check that out and vote for it.

There are a slew of other things going on as well that cause me to not get enough hours of sleep at night (did I mention a busy planning season?), but these are the important ones worth mentioning.

Have a great weekend, all!

Then in 2009, the Drunk Duck Awards rolled around again and the romance seemed to continue – but with a twist! Suddenly, it was inevitable. My creative juices started flowing, and having been in regular contact with the creators of But Not Really, we formed a plan and the story that unfolds before you is the result of that. The two girls came to stay with me for a full week, and we certainly went on some fun adventures. However, none would be more entertaining (or challenging) as acting out a fictional romance with someone that you just met for the first time in person.

So sit back, relax, pop some popcorn, and get ready for an an comedic internet romance two years in the making!

Ever since the 2008 Drunk Duck Awards people have been asking when Jess and Trevor would get together. However, there was a problem with her being in Texas and me being in (originally Michigan) Chicago. Ideas were instantly thrown around about starting a separate web comic series where the two of us would be dating online and would eventually get together in real life, but were just as quickly abandoned.

(…to be continued until Friday…)

@$$hole!: Blind Date 6

My Site and Drunk Duck

The waiter is played by Erica’s real-life boyfriend, Mike Ambs. Mike has worked in video editing for various websites, and recently moved to the Ann Arbor area…of course, after I left the state. :P

He’s an awesome guy and was tons of fun to work with. Very open to my direction and ideas, and even had a slew of his own to contribute. Very creative individual, and I encourage you all to follow him on twitter. He also has a flikr account, but I can’t think of the url off the top of my head.

Well, I’m at Wizard World Chicago already. So if you’re there (or in the area), be sure to stop by. I’m not exhibiting this year, but I’ll be shaking hands and kissing babies on the floor all day, doing a few panels at night, and will certainly be in the Hyatt bar after hours for a drink. Stop by, say hello to the bald man with bad posture (me).

Also, if you haven’t done so yet, be sure to check out Erica Hampton’s website, as she’s the awesome person both taking the pictures and playing the Crazy Cat Loving Lady (who will have a name soon).
